My cousin Jose graduated from Harvard Medical today. It was a miserable day otherwise–cold, wet, and Boston. The Boston part wasn’t so bad, I like the city, it’s just not the same without a full reunion.

So Jose wore his third gown and hat, listened to his third commencement and received his third diploma today. Each as valuable and impressive as the next. All of them earned and deserved, and together, if not individually, a lifetime achievement.

But as convenient and tempting it may be to let a title like Ph.D. of Genetics Oxford, or even M.D. from Harvard Medical define a lifetime, he won’t. I won’t. We won’t let him. His curiosity and genuine interest in progress and achievement prevent him from settling.

But he’s not the only one.
